Fracture Liaison Services

Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) successfully, and cost-effectively, case-find osteoporosis in patients who have had a fragility fracture. This has led to this service model gaining the support of the National Osteoporosis Society, all relevant professional organisations and the Department of Health.

Find out more about FLS and use these resources to support the development of your service.

Understanding Fracture Liaison Services

In October 2010, the National Osteoporosis Society held a series of learning events across England and Wales. The interactive events explained the clinical and cost effectiveness case for Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), explored the key components of a successful service and examined the process of business planning.

Department of Health support for falls and fractures services

Department of Health guidance supports Fracture Liaison Services. These documents explain the strategic approach to fracture prevention and the role of FLSs. An economic evaluation of FLS is included, showing they are cost saving.

Fracture Liaison Model

A flexible modeling tool has been developed by Harvey Walsh Limited via a service to medicine grant from Procter and Gamble (PG) Pharmaceuticals, in conjunction with NHS clinicians. The tool is hosted by the Department of Health.

The tool has been designed for use by individual communities to develop a business case for a fracture liaison service, allowing them to include both local activity data and local costs to forecast the impact of such a service.
