What we do

The National Osteoporosis Society is the only UK wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

With over 25,000 members, 50 staff and more than 900 volunteers across the UK, the charity is well placed to provide unrivalled expertise in its field. On this page, you can find out about some of the key services we offer.

Our Strategic Plan for 2013-17 sets out the vision, mission, and key objectives that will drive our work during the next five years. Our vision is a future without fragility fractures, and in order to achieve this vision our mission will be to:

• Improve public awareness and understanding of osteoporosis.

• Influence health and social care provision to achieve excellence in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis to prevent fragility fractures.

• Provide caring support and information to enable people affected by osteoporosis to make a positive difference to their lives.

You can download our Strategic Plan by clicking here.

Helpline service

A team of eight nurses is on hand every weekday between 9am and 5pm to answer medical queries relating to osteoporosis. They can be contacted by phone, email or post and also welcome enquiries from healthcare professionals. Please click here for more information on the Helpline.

Information

Information is often the first thing people would like to access when they are first diagnosed with osteoporosis. Our website provides an excellent source of information and advice on all aspects of the fragile bone disease. To find out more, please visit our osteoporosis section.

The charity also produces a range of booklets which are free to download from our website or order from our online shop. Alternatively, if you would like to receive an information pack by post then email your details to us at info@nos.org.uk.

Local support groups

The charity has a UK wide network of around 100 support groups which meet on a regular basis to offer support to sufferers of osteoporosis. Please click here to find out more about our local support groups and to locate your nearest one.

Influencing governments

A key part of the charity's work is to encourage UK governments and health services to resource and deliver appropriate services to prevent and treat broken bones. Visit the Influencing Change section of our website to find out more about this important element of our work.

Research

In order to increase understanding of the disease and improve treatment options and patient care, the National Osteoporosis Society invests strongly in research into osteoporosis. The charity’s research grants programme has helped to fund a variety of projects. Click here to visit our Research section.
