'For a breakfree future' is the National Osteoporosis Society's ambitious campaign to change the future for people with fragile bones. We want to eradicate unnecessary broken bones, saving thousands of lives and helping people to live their lives without pain and disability. We are calling for urgent action to support our campaign to reduce the number of people suffering unnecessarily because of the impact of fragile bones.
We will:
- provide life-changing information
- offer practical guidance and emotional support
- raise awareness of osteoporosis and the steps that can be taken to prevent it
- fund groundbreaking medical research
- support those with a new diagnosis
- campaign vigorously for better services locally and across the UK
- educate health professionals to diagnose and treat people with fragile bones more effectively

Why is the campaign so important?
Our 25th Anniversary Report and Survey highlight disturbing failures in the care of people with fragile bones and predicts spiralling human and economic costs.
The survey of over 700 people diagnosed with osteoporosis showed that many are suffering unnecessarily because they are not being identified despite breaking bones or having common risk factors - both of which should raise the alarm for health professionals.
For 70%, osteoporosis was not discussed by their health professional after they broke a bone and a further 8% had to raise the subject before it was discussed. A staggering 26% of respondents were only diagnosed after suffering multiple fractures. In addition, 35% had to wait more than a year after breaking a bone before being diagnosed and 22% had to wait more than 5 years.

Help support the campaign.
The number of people with fragile bones in the UK continues to grow dramatically. Fragile bones lead to 300,000 fractures in the UK annually; this compares to the 275,000 heart attacks and 110,000 strokes.
Together we can do something to help prevent these fractures. Your support brings us closer to a breakfree future for everyone.

Any donation you are able to make will be gratefully received and used to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of people at risk of fractures from fragile bones.
