Hi
Spoke to my GP this am and told him about the severe joint pains, nausea, feeling awful and abdominal pains and he said he had never heard of anyone reporting severe joint pains with Alendronic Acid before. He said why did I think they were related to the drug?. When I said they started the following morning after taking it he said wel I could have something else wrong with me like a virus/cold. He said I could leave it off for a couple of weeks and try again. I said no I felt so awful and won't take again. I felt he didn't really believe me. I asked about Strontium Ranelelate and he didn't exactly say he had never heard of it but said he had never prescribed it and didn't know about it so no he wouldn't prescribe it.he said he would contact my Endocrinologist for advice but from previous history the letters never get sent!.
I have decided to buy Strontium Citrate as I understand the Ranelate is the compound that can cause the side effects.
I have found a good article on Strontium which is tahomaclinicblog.com/strontium/#art if any one wants to look.

Hi Gina
That is incredible, but not surprising. For some reason even out here in Spain the Doctors don't like prescribing SR. Maybe the reason is that they know it has a much better track record than all that other 'stuff' and a well patient is a bad customer for them. At least that is the conclusion I have come to. They just WANT us to be ill (ok, not all of them are like that, but far too many)
Regards
Sieglinde

GIna (03/02/2012) I have decided to buy Strontium Citrate as I understand the Ranelate is the compound that can cause the side effects.
Hi Gina,
I've looked into this because I take Strontium Ranelate and obviously I want to do the best for myself. There is no evidence one way or the other that it is the Ranelate part of Strontium Ranelate that could cause side effects ! No one knows what causes the few side effects - it is just as likely to be the Strontium part so would be the same for both Strontium Ranelate and Strontium Citrate. However, the risk of side effects from strontium is very low and anyway, people can get side effects from anything. I get such bad side effects from calcium supplements, both prescription and health food shop ones (severe diarrhoea), that my endocrinologist told me I had to stop taking them.
That's a pity your GP doesn't know about Strontium Ranelate. You could get a leaflet from the National Osteoporosis Society which details the various osteoporosis medications and give that to him. You could also print off the relevant pages of NHS Choices with regard to osteoporosis medications.
This shows, like many of us already know, that many GP's are very ignorant about osteoporosis - how can a doctor effectively treat a patient if he/she doesn't know of the various medications ?
Can you get referred to your endocrinologist ? He might know more about osteoporosis medications, though there's no guarantees
Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Hi Anne
Sorry about saying that Ranelate is part that potentially can cause the side effe cts. Can't remember where I got that info from. Loads of info on google but difficult to sort out the information and lots of companies selling their wares and promoting their products. That's why I would rather get advice from real people with experience of the condition and who have experience of the medications available.

Don't worry Gina, don't apologise ! If I couldn't get Strontium Ranelate I would go for Strontium Citrate too....I just don't think one is worse than the other. I know a lot of American and Canadian sites say that Strontium Citrate is better but part of the reason they say that is that they can't get Strontium Ranelate prescribed over there so it's kind of compensatory to say that Citrate is somehow better. It's touted as being 'natural' but it's still made via a chemical process in a factory, it's not dug out of the ground LOL The most recent study which Lynne posted the other day which concluded that Strontium Citrate was better than Strontium Ranelate was flawed because they didn't compare like for like, they had everyone in their study taking Strontium Citrate, vitamin D3, vitamin K2 and doing exercise whereas the data from people taking Strontium Ranelate did not include people also taking vitamin D3, vitamin K2 and exercising !
