It will not have escaped the attention of regular forum users that the level of spam (posts often irrelevant to the topic, often advertising products or services with links to other websites) has been increasing.
We have considered many options to reduce the amount of spam, including suggestions from some forum users that we moderate all posts or vet all new members before they are permitted to post.
The decision was made that we want to keep this forum as open as possible. We want a public space rather than a walled community. Unfortunately, making it easy for new-comers to join in or post anonymously makes it easy for spammers to post their spam. We endeavour to keep the site as clear of spam as we can but it is not possible to keep it completely free. A public space will always have a small amount of litter.
However, we have noticed that the majority of spam posts have their links to other websites in their signature. Therefore, we have decided to disable the option to have user signatures automatically append every post. We realise this move may not be popular with people who use the signatures, but we feel it is a good compromise reducing the number potentially dangerous spam links and keeping the site as open as possible.
Existing signatures will remain. Please send me a message if you would have a signature and would like it removed.
