Hi

I have also recently been diagnosed as having osteopenia and have been given Adcal-D3, lemon flavour. I broke my ankle badly last May and softening of the bones was diagnosed. Since taking Adcal-D3 I have been getting diarrhea daily and am worried as I also suffer diverticulitis and occasional IBS. As yet I haven't noticed any further symptoms but do get pains either side of my waist at the back (possibly my kidneys). I eat almonds on a daily basis but after reading all of these comments I am now going to reduce my caffiene intake, exercise more, start taking cod liver oil tablets and also start to eat sardines, which I hate. I would sooner eat them than get diarrhea which eventually depletes your body of nutrients.

I already take thyroxine daily which is one of the causes of OP but of course I cannot stop taking that, so I am seriously considering all of the comments in this forum for ways to improve my diet regarding bone building.

The comment made earlier in this forum saying that animal protein is not as beneficial as vegetable protein for OP was very interesting and is worth thinking about.

I did tell my doctor I didn't like Adcal-D3 but she said well you need them so you have to take them. I do wish I could prove her wrong.

Hi Bernadette,

I got very bad side effects from calcium supplements, whether on prescription from my GP or from a health food shop - namely diarrhoea. It was so bad that I was referred to a gastroenterologist and had colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy because they didn't know the cause of the diarrhoea at that point. I eventually discovered it was due to the calcium and my endocrinologist told me to stop taking the calcium supplements and that I could get all the calcium I needed from my diet (dairy free too but still I get enough calcium). I am prescribed vitamin D3 on its own, called Dekristol. It gives a much higher dose than Adcal-D3 but without the calcium and my serum levels of vitamin D are checked every six months now. I get the equivalent of 1,500 IU D3 per day during the summer and 3,000 IU per day in the winter and my levels of serum D are in the optimal range.

With respect to your doctor, you say "softening of the bones was diagnosed". Softening of the bones is osteomalacia which is caused usually by very low levels of serum D. A person can have both osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Here is a thread about osteomalacia which causes bone pain - osteoporosis doesn't cause pain - both cause fractures: Osteoporosis and Osteomalacia

The cure for osteomalacia is very high doses of vitamin D - much, much higher than you can get from Adcal-D3.

Have you seen a consultant about this "softening" of your bones ?

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Well I do not know about the weight gain but I do have excess fluid at the top of my legs, but it could be down to other things. I reckon if the fluid went, I would weigh a lot less.

very interesting forum. I am taking part in a trial at Guy's Hospital in London to do with osteoporosis. I was found to be osteoporotic in hip and low spine (I also suffer from osteo arthritis and fibromyalgia - both unrelated to this research project - which have caused me pain for a number of years for which I take a range of pain relief) have been put into a trial group of AdCal and Alendronic Acid for 2 years - have taken two doses of AA a week apart, and AdCal daily after dinner. Have started to experience indigestion, stomach pain and flatulence (very embarrassing) I am in every other way a fit, active 60 year old. I have to keep a diary of any effects to report back to the project, but apart from this discomfort so far ok on this medication. Will keep in touch with this forum JudeB

Went to doctor 5 days ago for a further prescription of Prednisolone Tablets ( been taking them 2 years now for PMR/Giant Cell Arteritis reason so long on these is I keep getting a"flare up" when dose is reduced to 2mg so have to go back onto 20mg again and start reducing again) was totally surprised when told to take Adcal-D3 and Alendronic Acid, reason given was the long time on Steriods. I now have constipation and a very sore tongue just after 4 days. I do not have any bone problems when I had a bone density scan 5 years ago (aged 62yrs) was told I had the bone density of a 16 year old, I also had a density scan 2 years ago when starting on Prednisolone and again all was good. All I can think of meantime (until I get back to the doctor) is that I need to take these medicines for Calcium/Vitamin D deficiency, which would totally surprise me as have had all the blood tests done every year and my current diet contains all the requirements needed and also get lots of sun, e.g. sitting out for lunch on a warm sunny November day,(albeit with a heavy jumper on). After reading the comments I will definately NOT be taking the Alendronic Acid and if this sore tongue persists will not be taking the Adcal either. Can anyone tell me if the side effects go away with time or are they for always if I continue the medicine.

Thank you
Eileen.
