You've noticed ! Many of us noticed that user profiles could be accessed by anyone, anyone who is not a member of the forum ! We've complained about this and other areas of lack of security to the moderator several times - to the previous moderator and to the current one. Nothing has ever been done. Several forum members left the forum in dismay once (under the previous moderator).

Why do you think there is so much spam ? I'm on several health forums, as well as running one myself, and none of them has spam, the moderators have seen to that.

Look at the number of members of this forum, you'll see there are now 12,397 members. Next, do a sort of forum members by number of posts (search options at bottom of members page), and without much effort you'll discover that only approximately 900 members have ever posted a message (and of those, 350 have only posted 1 message - remember all those spam messages !) - that leaves 11,497 members who have never posted at all. Why ? There's no need to be a member of the NOS forum to access any of the posts, anyone can access any of the posts, you only need be a member to post messages - so why are there 11,497 members who've joined who don't need to ? Because they're spammers and bots or people trying to gain access to details about us........

.............not that they need to join to gain access to details about us, because, going back to your question, there are people accessing details about us who haven't even joined the forum ! There's no reason for anyone to access our profiles except other forum members (um those 11,497 who thought they had to join to gain access ?).

I do not know why the forum moderator, past and present, does not seem to understand this.

The only reason I stay on this forum is that it's the only UK osteoporosis forum and it's linked to the NOS...but sometimes I've half a mind to set up another one. One that would be much more secure.

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Thanks Ann for the explanation. Surely it is not difficult for the site admin to implement a more safe system for its members? I thought of e-mail harvesting when I saw 19 pages of Who's On and nearly all from the same IP address. Great pitty this has not been addressed.

Like AnneB I stay on this forum because it is the only forum in the UK for people with OP.

But I nothing in my profile can identify who I am - and before replying to posts I often the posters profile to try and find out if the are bone fide or just trawling the site.

What the NOS does not seem to realise is that while it is possible to get away with non existant security once you have been discovered by spammers then the site can be used for porn/drugs/money scams.

For the safety of the site users, and integrity of the NOS, I think this forum should be reopened with new controls for registering which prevent scammesr and bots, and anything/one without a geographic address, from registering. Once up an running then this forum should be closed.

I am so grateful to this site for enabling info to be shared between people with OP - please make it safe.

This is very worrying. I often forget to login, but until a few minutes ago I hadn't looked to see who was on the forum. The amount of spam is ridiculous, & there must be a way to make this site more secure. Perhaps if we all complian, something will be done.

Here's a couple of threads posted last year with many of us complaining. It's worth reading them:
