| I've had a similar eczema type problem but it predates taking SR. Wonder if other factors relating to OP can trigger eczema? Sounds like a worthy topic for a study - one possibility would be whether the onset of eczema could be a potential OP indicator.

| I'm on Adcal D3 and SR. For about a year I've had the sensitive teeth problem - sensitive to touch and crunch, feeling as though they're not properly fixed in the gum. Does that sound like what you feel? Don't have bone or muscle aches or lethargy.

| There is strontium in toothpaste for sensitive teeth like Sensodyne so I would guess it's not the strontium causing sensitivity !

| Im male 56 with OP. No fractures ( apart from bad car crashes & skiing accidents!) Only found I had it because I asked doc for a dexa ( I have hypogonadism which can cause op) They tried to give me bisphosphonates but after reading about them I persuaded the gp to give me SR instead. that was 18 months ago. Touch wood, Ive had no side effects that Ive noticed, & after a year I had a follow up dexa which showed a remarkable improvement in my BMD. I know results are skewed when taking Strontium due to its higher atomic weight but if my next dexa shows more improvement then that is all the proof I need that it works!

Hi, just joined today after a visit to the GP who told me that my DXA scan result shows I have bone density in my spine of a 70 year old. I am only 54, been active all my life, disgnosed before Christmas after pain in my back, wedge fracture. Now facing the "Do I, Don't I" take Alendronic Acid. Having read only a few posts here, I am absolutely horrified at the prospect of side effects. I won't even take a headache tablet so all this for me is a nightmare. Are there any alternatives that may help (other than good health etc.). My GP said I need to act now to prevent curvature of the spine in later life but having to stay on AA for the next 5/6 years is frightening. I just don't know what to do

Hi Jes,
I was 53 when diagnosed with osteoporosis. I was prescribed Strontium Ranelate (Protelos) and have been on it now for five years. No problems with it, no side effects.
I also do a lot of weight bearing exercise, a specific weight llifting technique twice a week, walking every day and a few exercises on a vibration platform twice a week. I also take care of my diet making if alkaline loading. And I take a high dose of vitamin D3 (get my level of serum D checked regularly) and vitamin K2. There's lots you can do.
Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Jes
There is alot that we can do to help ourselves - and when I came on this site in Jan 11, like you I was horrified at the prospect of AA and passively waiting for 'deterioration'.
Thanks to this site I was recommeded the book Osteoporosis How to treat, prevent and reverse it by Dr Marilyn Glenville - and it will tell you so much about how your body work and how to help yourself. It helped me regain my confidence.
Sarah
Tscore Lumbar spine -3.3, Femoral neck -2.6, Hip -2.2
Alkali diet (+ no caffeine/sugar/salt/rhubarb/spinach) and exercise and supplements of Vit D (2,000IUs daily), Vit K2 as MK7, vit K2 Menatetrenone, Cod liver oil.

I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis about 7 years ago, although I was only diagnosed as I finally went to the doctor in so much pain and was x-rayed. I am the type that questions every pill I am prescribed, ask loads of questions, but when I was first diagnosed, the doctor said "you will need to take Alendronic Acid as it will help your bones heal" I didn't question her at all, although I did wonder what it was doing exactly. I have not been online for long, so haven't looked things up till now. I always read the enclosed leaflets with the medication, but some of the side affects aren't listed . I got severe chronic bone pain...every bone in my body hurts like the devil. - other things also, including lack of sleep - for years - discomfort in the oesophogus (sure i have spellend that wrongly!) etc. I read some of the things on your Forum before Christmas and went to the doctorr to tell them I was going stop taking it. turns out I have been taking it for over 6 years! - noone told me I should not take it longer than 5. Ah well. I have now been off it for a couple of months and the bone pain is SLIGHTLY better, although that might be coincidental. but, my jaw and oesophogus problems seem worse.....very uncomfortable. did any of you stop taking it overnight, and if so, did you have any side effects? I would really love to know.....any comments would really be appreciated. I perhaps should go to the doctor, but I don't like going, and I am booked for a bone scan so won't go till after that. I will be 74 on Friday, and arthritis and osteoporosis runs in the women in my mother's family (not the men) Lucky me. Brenda

Brenda, I was one of the fortunate people who did not have any side effects from Alendronic Acid. I took it for 3 years (previously I'd taken another sinilar bisphosphonate drug) & stopped overnight as my Consultant thought that after 5 years of treatment we should see what happened if I took no further drugs. I am sorry to hear you have had so much pain since stopping the treatment, & hope it can be sorted out. Hopefully your next bone scan will show some improvement - it's always a relieft to know a drug treatment has worked.
And Happy Birthday for Friday..
Karen (arthritis is on the female side in my family, but so far it seems to have ignored me).
