| Hi All A few days before I was due to go on holiday in Spain I twisted my ankle rushing to the supermarket and it came up like a duck egg on the side of my foot. I hobbled to the chemist and got a tubi-grip bandage and thought that would be enough and set off for my holiday. The swelling didn't go away so thought better check it out when I got back to UK. X-Ray showed nothing broken but had torn the tendons which they said would take 8 weeks to heal. Also cracked a rib on a post as I fell which they said there was nothing you could do about and just had to wait for it to heal. Didn't realise a cracked rib could be so painful. Just wondering if any forum members have torn tendons or ligaments in their foot and how long it took to repair. Also were you told to do any exercise for it as nobody has mentioned getting my foot more mobile during or after the healing process. The rib I will just have to put up with. We were due to go on an organised mountain walk in Spain but I wasn't capable of doing that but I am hoping to do another one when out again in February. The moral of my story is 'slow down' nothing is worth the rushing around for especially at this busy time of year. You still get things done even at a slower pace. It's very frustrating for me now as I can't do my walking or Zumba and even worse I have two Dinner Dances to go to soon and I won't be able to do any dancing either! Take care and remember, don't rush - even to get that last Xmas present! Lyn C

Hi Lyn,
Not long before I was diagnosed with osteoporosis I stepped off a pavement in the dark not realising that it was a 'double height' kerb. I badly twisted my ankle. Went to walk in casualty the following morning as the ankle was so terribly swollen and bruised and I could not stand on it at all. They didn't even x-ray me ! I was told to keep ankle raised and do special exercises straight away......mostly exercises moving the toes. The ankle slowly got better but three months later I got impatient and saw a physiotherapist who helped further by doing ultrasound stuff on it. It takes a long time for these things to heal, tendons and ligaments are very slow to heal.
Patience is the key here,
all the best !
Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Lyn
Poor you! Will you be able to go to Spain but not 'walk'. It just shows how easy it is to damage yourself, and I agree with all Lyn says about 'go slow and take care'.
I have had tendon/cartlidge problems in my left knee ever since I damaged ligaments Scottish dancing (1995) and did nothing about it. I hoped that I would be able to dance again, but never managed to. I was an utter idiot and pushed and pushed myself to get better and never went to the doc. Result - permanent weakness in my left knee.
All I would urge you to do is to not think of any 'activity' that invovles continual use of you ankle for at least a year. Yes, you will be able to walk and to go on 'walks' - but to go on a walking holiday would be pushing your ankle. And is that necessary?
I wish I had not done so much 15 years ago - then I'd be able to do more now.
Ligaments take a LONG time to heal.
Sarah.
Tscore Lumbar spine -3.3, Femoral neck -2.6, Hip -2.2
Alkali diet (+ no caffeine/sugar/salt/rhubarb/spinach) and exercise and supplements of Vit D (2,000IUs daily), Vit K2 as MK7, vit K2 Menatetrenone, Cod liver oil.

| Hi Annabel & Sarah Thank you both for your response. I do feel I should be doing something as my ankle is very stiff and I worry that the tendons are adhering back shorter than they were previously, it is important for me to be able to get back to my regular walking sessions as soon as I can. My private health runs out this month so I might when it is renewed in January take your lead Annabel and see a physiotherapist to get some treatment to make my foot more supple, it will be worth the £100 excess if it sorts it out quicker and better for the long term especially after reading Sarah's tale with her knee ligaments. We actually did the trip to Spain Sarah but I had to do the coffee and lunch thing with the partners that didn't want to walk. I know where I would have preferred to be (up a mountain looking at the views) but at least my husband took some photos to show me when he got back. I bought walking poles following Annabel's link advice but didn't get to use them, hopefully will soon once my ankle is back to normal but I am preparing for a long haul in recovery. Unfortunately there isn't much exercise you can do with only one good ankle apart from hopping! I now have a collection of suitable 'flat' shoes to wear to work to try to avoid any unnecessary falling off my shoe incidents. Lyn C
