Hi every one, well i still can't get my head around the fact i have osteoporosis, my doctor says i only just dip in to the osteoporosis as two years ago i was osteopenia, Im 52 and had been on the contraceptive Depo Provera from the age of 43 until i was 50, i wasn't aware of the risks of bone thinning being on this drug, i felt absolutely fine, brilliant having no periods, thought it was the best thing ever, don't even know when i had my menopause, if only i knew what the consequences were i could have perhaps come off the drug earlier or taken calcium supplements, the only reason it was picked up was the fact i had two fractures within 6 months of each other, but then it is an occupational hazard working with horses i thought nothing of it, but my doctor was concerned so sent me for a bone scan two years ago, and well here i am feeling quite confused and bitter

Like you I felt shocked when I was diagnosed, I could not talk to anyone for a few days, and like you my OP was due to a medical slip up on prescribing drugs.

But I came on this site and got some fantastic help and lots of support. I was thrilled as I did not have a clue what to do or who to trust. Even now I really only trust people on this forum and the US equivalent of the NOS.

The first bit of help that I was given was to be told 'find out how OP happens, and how you can stop it getting worse' and I was advised to read a book called Osteoporosis How to treat, prevent and reverse it by Dr Marilyn Glenville. This book gave me my life back, because I began to understand how OP works and what yo can do to help yourself.

One of the quickest and most effective ways to help yourself is by having an alkali diet. An alkali diet is 80% veg and fruit and 20% protein but on half of that from animal sources. And it really can be done. The reason you need to avoid foods that make for acid in your stomach is because your body leeches out calcium from your bones to nuetralise the acidity.

Then there is exercise, weight bearing exercise.

Have just recently been recommeded a book called Your Bones by Lara Pizzorno and that is also good for info on supplements and exercise.

But do try not to despair.

I was in hospital twice with a hip fracture and it was not until about 4 months later that I got my diagnosis.  I was devastated and in shock myself.  I couldn't get any sensible answers from anyone medical - I didn't then know about this NOS site!  So one very bad afternoon when I was at my lowest I rang Samaritans.  I spoke to a lovely young man who was so sympathetic about my feelings and we had a long conversation all about me.  I didn't know him or he me and I knew it was all confidential so I told him exactly how I was feeling about life.  Obviously he had no medical knowledge and I know he wouldn't have told me even if he had.  But it helped me so much and I felt that my burden was eased slightly by being shared.  If anyone needs to ring them their national number is 08457 909090.
