with weight bearing, one can load the spine, so you have to be extremely careful. I attend a pilates class, and the tutor knows a huge amount about back care, and osteoporosis. If you can imagine yourself bending down, to lift weights, and what it does to your spine.!!

Hi Jilly,
I do my weight lifting at a gym and of course a person has to be careful about how they lift weights. That goes for anyone ! No one should ever bend over to lift weights, ever. A person joining a proper gym will be shown how to use the various machines for weight lifting or how to lift free weights absolutely safely. I was originally referred to a gym by my GP so I know that the advice given to me by the trainer was correct. Now I go to another gym and everyone there lifts weights properly - even those big burly men who lift enormously heavy weights have to lift correctly so they don't put a strain on their backs or joints - the whole point of weight lifting is to work the muscles not injure yourself !
