[size=2]Multiple Sclerosis sufferer whose recently found out vit.d3 levels low compared to population at large. Been given Fosamax & calcium & vit.d3 supplements. Gp recently prescribed another 1,000mg of vit.d3 which when taken with my other meds gives me a massive headache, my urine burns and I feel generally unwell.

To date I find just taking 400UI vit.d3 x twice per day can be tolerated. What should I do, keep trying or go back to gp and explain.

Ive also tried zinc and had major overdose symptoms - metalic taste in the mouth & swollen throat.

Is it that some people are super sensitive to too much too soon?

Thanking you

Hi Bren

Thank you for your recent post about the problems you are experiencing possibly due to your increased prescription of vitamin D.

Firstly I’m assuming the amount the doctor has prescribed for you is an additional 1000 international units (IU) equivalent to 25 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin D3 (rather than the 1000mg you mention in your post). Also just to say it is not unusual for even higher doses than this to be given initially to people with very low levels of vitamin D in order to quickly restore the body’s stores.

Certainly headache and feeling unwell are two side effects that could be associated with having too much vitamin D. These symptoms are usually caused by raised levels of calcium in the blood and urine. However, if you have just started taking this larger dose of vitamin D then it may be too soon to have caused a high calcium level in the bloodstream. However in answer to your question, it would be important to go back and discuss this with your GP to rule out this possibility and to establish the cause of these symptoms.

I do hope you get this sorted soon and begin to feel better.

Best wishes
