Hi all,

I am v confused about vitamin D3.  I cannot tolerate any kind of calcium ( I have IBS amongst other things).  I am taking the required amount of calcium from my diet in the form of dairy/tinned oily fish etc. & my doctor knows that I am taking Healthspan St Clements Cod liver oil 1,000 mg in capsules.  They contain 2.25mcg D3, 200mg Omega-3, 210mcg & 1.2mg vitamin E.  After reading about this on these forums I appear to have been wasting my time for the lst 18 months which is not good as my spine is -3.6 & clearly needs improvement.

Is the vitamin A cancelling out what D3 is availble from these capsules?  Presumably I need a much higher dose?  I'm seeing my doctor soon, but not convinced she knows about all this either.

Hi Maria,

From what I understand, cod liver oil is not a good way to get your vitamin D3 because you have to take such a large amount of it that you would get too high an amount of vitamin A which is not good.

You can get vitamin D3 capsules which are just D3 and that's what I take. I used to buy them from a health food shop but now I get them on prescription - Dekristol - which is 20,000 IU D3, I take one every other week in the summer and one a week in the winter, that's giving me approx 1,500 IU per day in the summer and 3,000 IU per day in the winter. The only way for you to know how much and what strength vitamin D you should take is by having your vitamin D level tested and monitored - it's just a simple blood test. This link to a doctor's guide on vitamin D lists all the makes of D3 that you can buy: Vitamin D Guidelines for doctors

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Thank you so much Annabel.  I really do mean it when I say I have no idea what I would do without the Nos forum.  Some of you are so knowledgable about osteoporosis.  I suppose there's no chance of you retraining as doctors?  Mine seems to put all her faith in the drugs (which are still making me unwell).

I'm seeing her again tomorrow & will bring up D3 also, though I'll likely end up buying it.  Which I don't mind as what I crave most is useful information.

Thanks again,

Maria10
