I have just had a pomegranate and thought 'there must be a reason why they are so popular' so googled it and found out that pomegranates are good for getting the osteoblasts (that build new bone) working! So will now eat pomegranates.

I'd rather have a pomegranate than any pill.....

Great news Sarah! I have pomegranate juice every morning for other reasons but I didn't realise it was also good for OP. Thanks for posting that.

In Jan this year I was diagnosed with OP, and intially prescribed AA. I refused to take AA because of the side effects. For the last 4 months I have been taking Strontium Ranelate.

Hi, I have been taking AA for many ears without SEs. I'm careful to stay upright for an hour then follow with other meds and food. I can then lie again if I want.

But I have read that bisphoshonates does indeed increase BMD (my DEXA scans have shown improvement over the years. But I have also read that the rather arbitary 'bone quality' is not good at about 5 years. So if the AA has raised the bone density, maybe one should stop it. I also take Adcal D3 (or rather NATECAL-D3 now). That also, or at least calcium has been cited as causing an increase in cardiovascular events.

But I have to balance out the fact that I take Anti-Epileptic drugs (the old kind like Tegretol and Mysoline) which have an effect on lowering BMD. AEDs also cause vit D to be lost. My recent vit D tests were OK, but not great.

I'd certainly like to stop AA is it is a pain in the wassname to have to take. Then for the NATECAL-D3 I have to remember not to have it within 4 hours of AA and also not with certain foods and drinks.

Didronel PMO 3 years to 2001/2, then Alendronic Acid 2001/2 to present, Adcal-D3 2007 to present, epilepsy drugs since 1976, one collapsed vertebra. BMD near normal now.

Like you I take AED's (mysoline) and my Vit D level was 14.7 nmol as a result. I bought vit D from the US and with the GP's support took 20.000IU's a week for 3 months. My vit D levels are now around 115 nmol. So I cut down on the Vit D dosage.

From what I have read about AA the 'bone quality' is rather suspect, so I chose to take Strontium Ranelate. But had to come off that as it gave me the trots.
So now I take supplements/alkali diet and exercise.

And I feel beetter for it. (Except not tonight as I have got a lurgy and just off to bed....)

Alendronic Acid - thank you all for sending your experiences....I have just found this forum and have been wary of AA for a long time, but have been taking it for 6 years! I went to the Dr yesterday and insisted I will stop.....I am hoping the chronic bone pain that I have experienced ever since I was diagnosed and prescribed AA will ease up a bit, at least. Brenda
