Hi

Weight lifting is on the list, I will note the superslow methodfor the exercise coach. I had heard of the vibration plate but in passing. Is it any good? I do have to be careful with the jogging and it is in my spine but only doing it lightly, the walking is good though.

If it is ok to ask, what is the alkaline diet? we think that my bones have not been absorbing calcium for quite some time and like you, the eating disorder may not have helped but apparently it is between 13-25 where women need the most calcium and I don't suppose my college years helped at all! The multi vit has the magnesium and boron in to help absorb and 20ug of vit K.

I had an exercise referral to a gym from my GP but the exercise trainer, though she knew about superslow, didn't know the details and just showed me how to use the machines and free weights correctly. Since I'd already been doing superslow at home à la Frederick Hahn's 'The Slow Burn' I knew that way of lifting well, I just didn't know how to use the machines. I've now moved on to a gym nearer home - the exercise referral one from the GP was at a local authority gym a bit of a distance away but it was a very good place to start and learn how to lift correctly - so important to have good form or it can do harm rather than good.

I enjoy using the vibration platform - I don't know how effective it is in increasing bone density - the NOS has a leaflet on their website about vibration platforms. I'll try anything as long as it isn't harmful

An alkaline diet - the NOS eating for osteoporosis leaflet on their website mentions it, and if you key in alkaline diet in Google or Yahoo you get loads of hits which explain it better than I can.

Between the age of 14 and 30 is the time when I would have not had much calcium, nor, more importantly, hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone as I missed most of my periods then so I would never have reached proper bone density ever

It is I think, will just get leaflet - here we are, its called NATPRO 'it is a very high quality trans-dermal cream containing 2000millograms of natural progesterone (per 60g tube) derived from wild yam and soy plants. Daily recommended level is 30mg.

Leaflet also says it is not the same as PROVERA which are chemically altered progestins with numerous harmful side effects.

Copied all that from leaflet, my Doc gave me this leaflet the research was in 1981 Dr. John R Lee, might be on the interenet?

Not looking to use the cream just yet as I want to get the exercise underway and see if any others have used it.

I use Pro-Juven which is the kind that Dr John Lee advocated, it's natural progesterone cream and nothing like Porvera which, as you say is chemically altered progestins. I started using Pro-Juven when I was in my mid 40s for migraine headaches which were related to when I was pre-menstral....I was lucky in that my GP prescribed it. The cream really helped where nothing else would. I used it throughout my menopause and had none of the symptoms most people complain of. I've carried on using it as I'd read it might help with osteoporosis. Well who knows whether it has helped me, maybe my osteoporosis would have been worse without it, but since there isn't a parallel universe where I'm not using it, who knows ? Since it doesn't do any harm I'm happy to use it just in case it can help - every little thing I can do to help increase my bone density I will try as long as it's not harmful

hello there iam 41 year old and i just been diagnosed with osteoprosis on my hip ,i tried to find links that shows if it is popular for my age but i was not lucky .can any one give me an advice? as i dont want to feel iam uniq with this illness because of my age.also iam scared and confused.many thanks.walid

Hi there

I am 40 and I also recently had a dexa scan that showed osteo in one of my hips! It seems that more of us are being diagnosed at a younger age. The biggest headache I have had is being faced with a lack of knowledge/interest from my current GP about treatment/advice. I have had to insist for additional tests to look at possible secondary causes which I am currently undergoing. The GP is also refusing to refer me to a bone specialist which I find incredible. No advice whatsoever on diet or exercise either. I am not happy with taking drugs that have not tested on younger women and also think that, as you cannot take these drugs forever without interruption, I am better off taking them after the menopause when I will need them the most.

While I do not know what the long term effects of taking bisphosonates are on younger people, the reason I do not take them is because I am not impressed with the effect they have on 'older' people.

Although I was sceptical at first, I now beleive that diet/exercise/supplements are better than bisphosonates.

The drugs do not cure you anymore that diet and exercise will cure you. But you do not get the side effects of the medication.

There is a new book out Your Bones by Lara Pizorno which give lots of info about supplements and exrcise, I still think M Glenville's book is the best all round intro to OP.

I wonder how Jaye is getting on (Jaye started this thread)

Alkali diet (+ no caffeine/sugar/salt/rhubarb/spinach) and exercise and supplements of Vit D (2,000IUs daily), Vit K2 as MK7, vit K2 Menatetrenone, Cod liver oil.
