Hi, I have been prescribed Alendronic Acid for the first time today, and after reading about all of the side effects, I am really worried about taking them.

Hi,

I'm 57 and have a family history of osteoporosis- I was diagnosed with osteoporosis of the spine a couple of months ago and was prescribed alendronic acid- I was also very worried.

I talked to my consultant and the NOS helpline and decided to take it. So far I've had no side effects.

My consultant thinks that it is a good idea to take alendronic acid for a couple of years as it does work and then 'something better may have come along'. I'm going with this for now, but I am still uneasy.

I would love to hear someone else who has taken alendronic acid with no side effects as I seem to be the only one!

I took it for a few years with no problems at all.  I haven't taken any medication for about 4 1/2 years (my doctor thought I should have a break from treatment, & he wanted to see what would happen without drugs, as my bones aren't too bad), & have no idea what will happen when I see my consultant at the end of the year, but I don't think taking alendronic acid again would concern me.

I have been taking alendronic acid and the adcal D for about 6 months now.  I dont think I have had any problems with it, but am concerned and would prefer not to take it.  I was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a fall from my motor bike when I completely wrecked my shoulder joint (I DID land on a lump of metal) and am pretty sure my bones arent really that brittle.  As I have a few other medical problems which require a reasonably substantial amount of pills and potions I really would like to stop this acid.  I heard somewhere that the treatment of acid was only helpful for approximately two years after which time it was quite in order to stop it - has anyone else heard this?  I am 64 so slowly edging towards that great goodnight and would like to have some quality time while still possible.  would love to know if the two year thing is right - sheila

Hi,

I am 70, and have also a weakness in my spine and it is hereditory.  I have taken Alendronic Acid for 5 years and it has improved the reading from the scan.  My Doctor has advised that I continue.

Although I have had absolutely no problems with it (I follow the instructions to the letter, with copious amounts of water), I am not happy about the recent press reports.  I would love to find a way of dealing with it without drugs and extra calcium.  Which way do you jump?  (or not, in case you break something!!)

I'm 60 - I've been taking alendronic acid for 2 years. My bone density has increased and I've had no side effects- so it does work well for some people. Long term - I'm not quite so sure though.

I was diagnosed with OP in my spine last week! Doc gave me calcium & Fosamax. After taking one pill which gave me terrible indigestion I decided to do a bit of research on this drug.
Did NOT like what I read one bit! Seems it doesn't BUILD bone at all despite what the doc told me! It can HARDEN the bone but bone is meant to be tough so it can withstand bending forces. The Bisphosphonate drugs just make it hard & old.
I went back to doc today & asked her for Strontium Renelate which she reluctantly gave me.
I think there is a cost issue involved here.
Ive now ( since saturday) developed a really painful back, Im wondering if this too could be a side effect of the acid?

Hi there - I was interested to see your posting.  It seemed to me to imply that you had been able to have a second DEXA scan to see what effect the alendronic acid had had.  Was this through your GP?  I have been on the same treatment for 6/7 years and have been told that my PCT will not fund a second scan to see how I am reacting.  Not sure if this is just my PCT but would be interested to hear more if you have a moment.  Thanks

I have also been on Strontium Ranelate for nearly a year now, and I have not had a problem with this. Mt GP told me that they dont always prescribe this, because of cost.
