I have been given alendronic acid, one tablet a week plus adcal-D3 daily for build up my bones after being diagnosed with osteoporosis. I have also been diagnosed with possible RSD. After reading about the alendronic acid and side effects I don't feel I want to take this medication but will join a gym and do weight bearing exercises and lots of walking. Have anybody had bad side effects from alendronic acid and do anybody suffer from RSD as well?

Monica

I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis and been given alendronic acid one tablet a week. After reading about all the side effects, especially about the problem you can get with the teeth, (no dental treatment) I am not sure I will take these tablets. I have also been given Adcal D3 calcium with vitamin D one tablet a day. Has anyone taken the alendronic acid tablet and what if any side effects did you have?

I had the same treatment for a few years (after trying HRT for several years, then daily alendronate) & had no problems at all. The adcal did give me an occasional upset tummy, but it wasn't anything much.

Thanks for your reply. I am going back to see my GP to discuss with her if exercise and calcium with vitamin D is enough, I am due to go to visit my son and family in NZ in about 7 weeks time so am not keen to start new medication. Bad enough to have to fly such a long way so don't want to feel ill over there. I have only taken two tables of the calcium so far so I have to see if it agrees with me.

Thanks.

Monica

Hi  Took one alendronic acid weekly tablet  ONE . Immediatley had flu sypmtoms, blistering skin under HRT patch and around surgery scars, then eye problems conjutivitis and red eye . swollen wrists and ankles,  mouth ulcers, very dry skin and bloating over a period of about four weeks . The initial reaction put me off taking another one until i felt better . I didnt relate the other things to the tablet until speaking to a friend whose friend had had similar side  effects from alendronic acid . On reviewing the side efects especially the list with Stevens johnson syndrome  i have decided against taking any more . Too scared.

I'm scared too now, having read all this! And looked elsewhere online; you lot don't take all the blame.I've been taking it for three years now and haven't had any notable side effects other than some initial pain in bones that don't I normally get, like my hands and wrists. That has settled down now.

Hi, I have been taking Alendronic Acid tablets since mid July 2009 and have been experiencing abdominal cramps. My GP says it has nothing to do with taking the tablets but I am beginning to think it is. Last week I had a very bad upset stomach and was passing blood for three days. My doctor still said it had nothing to do with the medication. However, yesterday I had to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy, CT scan and ultrasound scan and the outcome of it is that I now have the following: Gastritis, Gastric Erosions, Gastric Polyps, Hiatus Hernia, mild Oesophagitis, and Diverticula Disease!

I am so cross to think this may have been caused by the tablets. I will know the full outcome next week.

My dentist had told me of the implications of taking this medication and her comment was that even if I stopped taking it now it will remain in my body for at least three years.

I cannot go on HRT anymore as I was on it 25 years ago for approximately 10 years, when I had an early menopause. Recently I tried it again and I had terrible migraines, hence why I have been put on A.Acid. I definitely have the bones of an elderly person, I'm 52, and know my bone density is low. What can I do now????

You can try Strontium Ranelate (Protelos) - it is not a bisphosphonate and has an entirely different mode of action. I have a history of hiatus hernia so I was put on Strontium Ranelate straight away. I've now been on it three years and have not had any problems.

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Annabel, were you told why you shouldn't take alendronic acid if you had a hiatus hernia?

My consultant told me that it should not be given to patients with a history of hiatus hernia. If you look at the Summary of Product Characteristics in the electronic Medicines Compendium of Alendronic Acid and look under contraindications you will see it says that "Oesophageal abnormalities" are a contraindication (hiatus hernia is an oesophageal abnormality): Contraindications

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Thanks Annabel. I have a hiatus hernia but unfortunately only found out about it after I had been on alendronic acid for a couple of years. I think it has caused me problems since but who can be sure of a causal link?
