Annabel Lee (08/07/2011) I love doing maths - just looked at the number of forum members and sorted them by their number of posts - there are currently 7,286 members but only 650 of those members have ever posted a message. That leaves 6,636 members who have never posted - and since you don't need to be a member to read any of the posts anyway, I don't know what that says about the forum.Welcome to the internet.

Dylan
I was a regular user of a site in Oxford. About 7 years ago a trickle of 'penis enlargement' type posts appeared. So 'remote deleters' (I was one) were able to remove sex/debt/drug posts. But then it turned into 50+an hour along with sexually explicit photos, at which stage 'remote deleting' became impossible .
The SOFTWARE had to be changed. Becuase as others have said, these are not 'people' generating the spam, but the forums with 'weak' deterrents are found 'electronically' and vast number of utterly degrading links are posted.
If you PM me I will put you in touch with the organisations that had this problem. I am sure they could help you.

Hi Sarah,
If the spamming becomes more than just a minor nuisance we can tighten the security. This can include manually authenticating new members if it becomes necessary but I'd rather avoid that for the reasons I mentioned previously.

It says its a normal forum Since 2000 I've been a member of a number of medical, social and educational forums and a co-moderator on one. Most people who join most forums are "lurkers" who never post anything. I just hope they read and learn. Cheers Jan

The thing is Jan, you don't need to join the NOS forum to read and learn ! The forum is open to anyone to read without joining, so I have to come to the conclusion that the over 6,000 members who joined and never posted are bots
I belong to several health forums and I have co-owned and co-moderated one for the past 10 years and we don't get any bots on the forum I co-own ! They may apply to join but, since they're bots they don't know what to say and so are rejected, simple as that !
