Last week the NOS reply to the query on 'no DEXA scans if you take SR' was as obscure as any 'consultants' response!
As I take SR and have been denied any help from the NHS on assessing whether or not SR is working - please can you tell me what tests are caried out by the NHS to assess the effectivness of SR?
Or is 'If you do not break any bones - then assume it's working' the best that the NHS/NOS has to offer?
Thank you.

| Hi Sarah W Thank you for your post enquiring about tests to monitor the effectiveness of strontium ranelate (Protelos). I'm afraid we are not able to help you a great deal more with this query. We fully appreciate your frustration that there is no conclusive test to show your treatment is working. Until technologies are widely available (beyond the research setting) that show us detailed images of the internal structure of bone (without having to perform a bone biopsy) the true affects of osteoporosis treatments on bone quality and strength remain somewhat hidden. However as mentioned previously, the research studies have demonstrated conclusively that this drug is effective at reducing the risk of fracture; so if you are at high risk you can be confident it’s likely to be working if taken as prescribed.
