In the latest Osteoporosis news it showed result of studys between calcium and heart attacks , and
Levothyroxine and increased fracture risk. As well as the osteoporosis i also suffer from Ischaemic Heart Disease, and
Hypothroidism also i.b.s. I currently take 100mcgm of Levothyroxine and 2 Adcal-D3 daily. My recent Dexa scan showed some increased
bone loss in my lumbar spine( have had fractures there). Am i increaseing my risk of further complications taking these drugs? and are
the results of these studys available so that i can discuss them with my g.p?

| Dear Bedford 1 Thank you for your post to the forum asking about whether or not you are at risk of further complications from taking calcium supplements and Levothyroxine. Both of the studies you refer to were published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) this year; the calcium study in early April and the thyroxine replacement study in early May. Both stories have been reported here http://www.nos.org.uk/page.aspx?pid=311 on our website. Given that you have ischaemic heart disease and take a calcium and vitamin D supplement we would suggest that you discuss your concerns about any increase in the risk of cardiovascular (heart and circulatory) problems with your GP or heart specialist. With regard to Levothyroxine; the increased fracture risk associated with thyroxine replacement in those with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is low but may be greater in older people with a higher fracture risk. Risk seemed to be dose related but even those on medium doses had some risk increase. Anyone on thyroxine replacement should be monitored by their GP and there is no need to stop taking thyroxine treatment, but if you are concerned you should talk to your GP.
