| hello, i wonder if anyone can give me some advice. I am 40 and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis for a few years now, i have broken ribs and fingers in the past. Two weeks ago i started to get sciatica down my left leg this has now gone into back ache too. I have been to docs who has told me to keep moving but no lifting etc and thats it. She has a quick look at my back and got me to move foreward and backwards, and checked nerve reflexes which she said weren't worrying. she said i would be in loads more pain if i had compression frctures Should i get an xray scan done? do i won't to know the results? or does knowing help you adapt your life better--- or am i worrying unnessarily. Thanks

Hi, when I had my MRI it showed 5 fractures. I had low back pain and had 3 fractures in the lumbar region. The other two were in the thoracic region (no pain whatsoever)
The funny thing was that 12mnths before all this nightmare began ( as I now have advanced OP with 6 spinal fractures)
I had noticed that I was having difficulty getting tops to look right on me and I was blaming the cheap fashion cuts, but my husband was always making jokes about me getting smaller. I wish I had gone to my GP at that point as obviously I had had fractures which I was unaware of and these had altered my shape slightly. I was told by the OP nurse that you can have compression fractures and have no symptoms from them at all apart from a slight loss in height.
We are all differentof course but I would just say listen to your body and keep a check on any height changes. I certainly didn't experience any pain that would have suggested 6 fractures.

Of course you are not worrying uneccessarily. You are 40, and should not have OP. (I am 63 and should not have OP - the reason I do have OP is because I am on anti epileptic drugs (AEDs) and if you are on AEDs your doc should prescribe VitD AFTER menopause. He did not know!!!!!)
When I was diagnosed (Jan 2011) I was given an A4 piece of paper and told to 'Take bisposphonates' (never heard of them at the time).
So I came onto this site and was given fantanstic/wonderful help. So will pass it onto you.
The first thing I was told was to find out for myself how I could help myself - as the GP's were giving rather hir or miss advice. The book that was recommended was Dr Marilyn Glenville Osteoprorosis how to treat , prevent and reverse. Dr Glenville is not a 'quack' doc, but a fellow of the Royal college and has a unique approach to OP which is not 'just about' medication, but includes nutrition and exercise. what I found about OP was staggering, and I 'got back' my life.
Instead of being a victim of OP, at last I felt there were things that I could do to 'help myself'.
My diet is now alkali (mainly veg with some meat/fish, but NEVER spinach/rhubarb/wheat/caffeine/sugar. The carbs I get from millet/buckwheat/rice/potatoes NEVER durum wheat pasta.)
I exercise in the gym 2x a week - I do SLOW BURN weights. I also walk for about an hour every day.
The other thing that Dr Glenville's book is good about it expalining how the OP drugs work. So I do not take bisphosonates but Strontium Ranelate. I also have 20,000IU's of Vit D a week (only recommended if you have severe Vit D defieicency) - this is not always available on the NHS, soI have bought high dose Vit D from the US (£10 for a year's supply!).
You are so young I would demand to find out WHY I had OP.
Take care
Sarah

Have you had your VitD level checked? If your Vit D level is low then your body does not absorb calcium = OP. How I know thi is because, like you, I lead a healthy life and there was NO reason for me to have OP - or so I thought!
I had my Vit D level tested and it was 14.7nmol - and it should be between 50-75 nmol. That is why I have OP. I now have 20,000IU's of vit D a week.

thank you for sharing this info. many people with OP are not aware of this. This will also help those who have no inkling about OP and how you can get them.
what doesn't kill you will make you stronger...

| I get sciatica occasionally. but I dont have any fractures. I do find Traditional Chinese Acupuncture a greal help in giving energy and moving to places needed in the body. I could not manage without it.
