I had my first injection of Denosumab last month but having researched a little more and having read some comments I am now beginning to be a little concerned about how safe it is, especially as it is a new treatment and there is no long term information. Have you any good advice as I'm beginning to be a little worried about it!

Dear Judith

Thank you for your post to the forum expressing your concern about the safety of denosumab (Prolia). It is not unusual to feel anxious about a change in your drug treatment and when a drug is new it is understandable that you might be worried about how safe it is.

To reassure you, all drugs are thoroughly tested by a rigorous process to ensure that they are safe and effective. During this testing process any observed side effect is carefully assessed for risk and frequency before the drug is approved and licensed. If a drug treatment is found to be unsafe or harmful it will not be licensed for use. Following licensing new drug treatments continue to be monitored for adverse reactions and if necessary patient and professional information is updated.

Prescribing any treatment is always a balance between the potential benefit of the treatment (such as reducing the risk of broken bones) against the risk of side effects and your doctor will be aware of this. To date, we have not any adverse feedback from patients being treated with denosumab (Prolia) or clinicians prescribing it to patients. However, if you have any particular concerns please do contact us on the helpline.

Best wishes
