James (24/02/2010) The forum is publicly viewable, yes - we made that decision because we felt there might be people who didn't want to post who would benefit from being able to read the discussions. The forum does have a private messaging feature which allows members to converse in private,
My main problem with that is that conversing in private means that other forum members do not benefit from the discussion and surely the whole point of a forum is that everyone benefits from everyone else's advise and support....that's the raison d'être of a forum in the first place. So, although I do converse in private with some other forum members my preference is to converse on forum so everyone can benefit...which is indeed your reason for making the forum publicly viewable !
I'm surprised how quiet the forum is considering there isn't another osteoporosis forum in the UK, and I sometimes wonder if the reason is because people are conversing in private or simply not wanting to join in because it's so public ?
however I would reiterate that you do need to be careful about what information you give away to people (as I'm sure you know).
Yes.
We have thought about making the forum private except to registered members, but it still doesn't stop someone from applying to join and then providing false details (which is sadly commonplace).
With the autistic spectrum forum I run everyone who applies to join has to write an introductory email to the moderator - that puts a lot of people off who are not really interested in joining but who want to spam, for example. Then, of course, just as with the NOS forum, a moderator is reading all the mails and can stop anything suspect as you have done on occasion. I'm glad you are always on the ball, James.
I think the best policy is to be very, very protective of your personal information, especially when online.
But if we're to talk openly about osteoporosis we are of necessity going to have to give medical details....but I feel safer now that my identity is harder to guess !
all the best,
Anne

| Yes, I belong to a couple of other forums, both on the same theme as each other with some of the same members, but one is private and the other one is public. The public one is much livelier than the private one.(but moderated differently). It can be disconcerting when those who are prepared to divulge personal details about themselves then want to know yours. But you have to put your own safety first.

| Sorry you've been having problems. You seem to have managed to post now, though. Were you pasting any text in from another website? That can sometimes cause the forum to not let you post.

| I am using Internet Explorer Trying to post a message as been as worst as waiting for my results to come through. I dont think ill bother trying to repost because if you havent got your system sorted so that new users wont encur any problems . I dont see why i should bother. It is anxious time for me worrying about what is about to happen with the possibility of having this disease and i crave for information and experiences from other sufferers. I dont have the patience for this

| I'm sorry you feel that way, but as far as I'm aware none of our other users are experiencing the problem you describe, so it's quite difficult for me to figure out what's going on. All I can suggest is that you upgrade your web browser if you haven't already (Internet Explorer 8 is the most recent version) - you can find out which version of Internet Explorer you're using by clicking 'Help' then 'About Internet Explorer'. If you're on version 6 or 7 you should upgrade immediately, as those older versions have several security problems - it should also sort out the problem on the forum. Beyond that I'll contact the people that make the software to see if they know why you might be having problems.

Hi James,
I know this is the wrong place to post but I can't seem to post private messages anymore as it says:
Available Private Message Space
Your folders are 100% full
Your folders are full. Other members cannot send you further private messages. You may wish to clear some old messages.
I selected several messages to move to the delete folder but I'm unable to delete them from the delete folder - help please !
