Hi
If you are taking Strontium ranelate or Strontium Supplements read this article:-
http://nutricology.com/In-Focus-April-2007-Strange-Case-of-Strontium-sp-54.html
Just for the record I'm experimenting with Strontium Citrate. Being male the NHS won't prescribe ranelate as it's not registered for males by nice.
The one thing though is the more I read the more you realise that osteoporosis is a disease where there is nothing certain both in traditional medicine and alternative.

Hi
I'm taking Strontium Ranelate so I found this article very interesting thanks. I've always been aware of the need to make sure I have plenty of calcium, magnesium and other synergistic minerals and vitamins along with my medication, as well as taking weight bearing exercise. As the article says, osteoporosis definitely cannot be treated in isolation just by taking a pill.
If you're experimenting with strontium citrate do bear in mind that it takes time for the effects to show up on DEXA scan and that when you have the scan you should tell the radiologist that you are taking strontium as it has an artefactual effect on bone density as well as a real effect, and that artefactual effect needs to be accounted for. There is a calculation that the radiologist needs to do. The radiologist who reported my follow up DEXA scan did not do this - luckily I could read my DEXA scan results and her report and could see she had made a mistake. I had to get on the phone to the x-ray department and talk to the radiologist who then redid the report - it's not nice a patient having to tell a doctor they have made a mistake I can tell you, I had to be soooo polite and I didn't feel polite at all as I had made it clear before the scan that I was on strontium !
You may be interested in the research on vitamin D - it transpires that something like 85% of the population are deficient to various degrees in vitamin D and this leads to all sorts of diseases, including osteoporosis. I am currently taking 2,000IU per day of vitamin D3 and I'm likely going to increase that next week when I get the results of my latest blood tests.
Here's an especially good website on D: http://www.grassrootshealth.net/ Watch some of the videos of lectures given to health professionals about it in the box titled 'now available online' - they're all free.
all the best,
Anne

My consultant told me that there is no NICE guidance for men with osteoporosis. This means that doctors can prescribe men whatever medication they feel is the best.
Actually no doctor needs to obey NICE guidance - it is guidance and only guidance. When the NOS asked members to write to their MPs about the changes to NICE osteoporosis guidance (for women) two years ago, my MP wrote on my behalf to the Department of Health and sent me a copy of their reply which says:
"Once NICE has published this technology appraisal guidance, health professionals are required to take it fully into account when deciding what treatments to give people. However, NICE guidance does not replace the knowledge and skills of individual health professionals who treat patients. It is still up to clinicians to make decisions about a particular patient..."

| Hello there, Just had a dexa scan at Synexus after 1 year taking SR and supporting it with diet, bone supplements etc. BMD up 7.5 %but was told there is no need for any adjustment according to manufacturers . I think I read that 50% is real improvement and rest is from SR. So I will just do my own sums next time! Do you know if Im correct on this? Many thanks, Anne Mac.
