My son has severe acne and it's getting worse. His doctor has been prescribing him a skin medication called Duac for the past 7 years. I just looked on the leaflet that comes with the cream and it says "Do not use for more than 12 weeks at a time" ! So why has my son's doctor continued to prescribe this medication year in year out for the past seven years ?
Several people on this forum have commented that they have bad advice from their doctors and now I am experiencing this from my son's. How can we think that doctors are always a reliable source of information ?
Sorry I need to vent about this.

my niece and nephew both had severe acne, my neice was prescribed Roaccutane and subsequently at the of 18yrs went into the menopause!!!!
this was linked with the medication she had been on, but was never proven. Following this both of them went under a naturopath with wonderful results,
worth a try, all medications do is mask the problem you need to get to the root cause, whether it be diet of hormone imbalance..

In 2007 I fractured my kneecap - the doc said 'that's a nasty bruise', and it took 6 months of limited mobility before I was referred to a orthopedic specialist.
Osteoporosis - has been caused because I am on anti epileptic medication and I should have prescribed Vit D after menopause. The doctor did not realise, so now I have OP.
Vit D - no test was done, but I asked for one, so my doc did it and it turned out my vit D was so low I probably need a Vit D injection, but until then my doc prescribed a DOUBLE dose of Adcal every day.
Do I trust Doctors? NO.

We, too, must take some responsibilty, as you said, on the leaflet, do not use for longer that 12 weeks at a time......I do trust doctors on the whole, but it must be realised that they are not infallible! The PIL, (patient information leaflets), are for us to read, however, I do think your Doctor must have had some idea. Did he not check the repeat prescription?Venting is good, bashing stuff out on keyboard is great! take care. x

Hi Jilly,
Five years ago when my son was first prescribed this cream I looked at the leaflet - he was 16 then and I always read the leaflets that accompany medicines. But I don't re-read the leaflets with every repeat prescription ! Obviously the manufacturers changed what was written !
Still this will teach me (and others maybe) that patient information leaflets may change and we should re-read them every time we get a repeat prescription. I also read the emedcines guide online - that is the guide that health professionals use - I've been using that for my own medicines as I'm on several.
But our doctors should know more about the medicines they prescribe and whether they are okay or not for long term use. It doesn't give one much faith in their prescribing ability does it

Jilly
I am with No6 on this - the doctors should know what they are prescribing.
If you 'trust' your doctor then why, after being told in the surgery the method of taking the pills, should you read the instructions and the briefings on the internet?

A friend of mine was on MST (Morphine Slow Release) for a couple of years, and became addicted, and had to go into rehab!! The outcome was she was OK, however, she did blame herself, and her GP, and the consultant. Doctors know about morphine, that was all badly managed, but made us realise to be more aware of everything regarding meds. We STILL need to check and recheck the leaflets!!

Hi Jilly - the trouble is that most Docs are soooo dominiering in the way they talk to people and the things they prescribe that one does not automatecially want to argue. When I questioned my OP prescriptions and situation (which is bad), my Doc got very agitated until I told him that I won't be seeing him again. Unless one is a Medic, it is hard to argue with them on the spot.
My principle now is that I always go home and do my own research before taking anything.

Sieglinde
