Sarah W (22/02/2011)
Alendronic Acid and Calcichew/AdCal are the usual, and cheapest, medications - BUT they are not necessarily the best. I would not take Alendronic Acid because it prevents osteoclasts from working and hinders the work of osteoblasts. Basically osteoclasts 'rinse'out old dead bone and osteoblasts build up new bone. So although your bone may 'look' better in a DEXA scan after taking Alendronic Acid, its basically old dead brittle bone! I refused to take Alendronate and have been prescribed Stontium Ranelate. Doctors are reluctant to prescribe SR as its significantly more expensive than Alendronate. But the NOS did take the NHS to court for NOT prescribing SR - and won. Also you need to alter your diet to an alkali diet and exercise. Sarah W Hi, Interested to read your post concerning Alendronic Acid and dead brittle bone. If possible could you please guide me to the relevant medical research so I can read more about this dead brittle bone. Thank you for your help. John.

Hello John
I read Dr Marilyn Glenville's book Osteoprorosis How to prevent treat and reverse it, and althogh her paragraph on Alendronate is not as condemning as I am, when you also read about osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and then read about the suppression of osteoclasts by Alendronate it becomes pretty clear that Alendronate does give the illusion of increased bone density. But this is not 'new' bone.
Please direct me to any research that gives contrary info. I really want a drug that will help me get better.
Several years ago the NOS took the NHS to court for not prescribing Strontium ranelate - and won.

| Hi Annabel Lee, No, I do take my ccalcium supplement at least 4hours before my Strontium. I was rather misled over being told that the SR does not work without the Calchichew. The NOS nurses put me right on that one, thanks to them, so my calcium supplement now comprises 600mg of calcium and 125 iu of Vitamin D. The remainder of I get through my diet.
