Here are some books I have found especially useful for giving me information on osteoporosis and helping me help myself:

'Osteoporosis, the silent epidemic' by Marilyn Glenville http://tinyurl.com/csd6fo lots of information about different treatments.
'Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis' by Alan Gaby http://tinyurl.com/awon63 A bit out of date regarding medications but absolutely tons of information about supplements and lifestyle.
'Better Bones, Better Body' by Susan Brown http://tinyurl.com/borktj
'The Myth of Osteoporosis' by Gillian Sanson http://tinyurl.com/bshqvh This doesn't say osteoporosis is a myth but it is a provocative title to make one understand that it's not just about DEXA scans.

These two books on exercise I have also found excellent:
'Exercises for Osteoporosis' by Dianne Daniels http://tinyurl.com/d9quum An easy to start with book with good illustrations
'The Slow Burn' by Frederick Hahn http://tinyurl.com/bpj8ap I refer to 'The Slow Burn' all the time for the weight lifting I do to help increase my bone density.

And here are some websites I've also found very useful (not counting the NOS website !) the first two packed with information about osteoporosis and the third one about vitamin D which is so important to bone health.

Thanks Glenys, I looked at the slide show and article on the Mayo Clinic site. Their exercises remind me of some of those in the book 'Exercises for Osteoporosis' by Dianne Daniels. I started out with those exercises when I was very first diagnosed with osteoporosis, nearly two and a half years ago, and they were good, especially good for at home. I then moved on to a gym and Slow Burn weight lifting

all the best,
Anne

The lady sends me regular updates, and I have found her book useful to dip into.

Kind regards , Julie.

Hey guys

Thanks for the info - I shall get reading.   I have been using the principles from the Save Our Bones book by Vivien Goldschmidt and trying to exercise as well.   I find this a bit difficult to fit in around work but realise its a must.

I am very anti the drugs are you all taking the drugs as well the exercise or trying to do without?

Hi Flick,

You ask if we are taking drugs as well as exercise or trying to do without - I personally take Strontium Ranelate (Protelos). I also do a weight lifting technique called SuperSlow which was devised specifically for osteoporotic women to help increase their bone density. I do this weight lifting twice a week, it's roughly 30 minutes only. As well as that I do gentle exercises on a Power Plate Vibration Platform three times a week, takes roughly 15 minutes. And I walk as much as I can. I also pay a lot of attention to my diet making sure that it has an alkaline load rather than acid one, and I take vitamin D3, 2000 IU per day and get my serum levels of D regularly tested. It's an all out multipronged attack on my osteoporosis

Re trampolining: I understand that trampolining could be harmful for osteoporosis as the impact could lead to compression fractures of the spine...something you might have to ask a physiotherapist who has expertise in osteoporosis.

I'm just reading an excellent book on osteoporosis which has tons of information about diet, supplements and lifestyle, it's 'The Bone Building Solution' by Sam Graci http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bone-building-Solution-Sam-Graci/dp/0470838914/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260124292&sr=8-1 I'm very pleased with it, it's full of invaluable information.

I see that one or two people on here are using the 'save our bones' book by Vivian Goldschmidt, which I was thinking of sending for. I wondered if the supplements and foods she recommends are available in the UK, as it is an American book. I get her emails, but often find that I have never heard of things she refers to!
