I am 46 and I've just been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in April and getting over the shock of that, as no really bad symptons, and today results of my Dexa scan mean the doctor has prescribed calcium and Alendronic Acid. I've looked it up and am horrified at the possible side effects. He was very vague about why, no "scores" or anything and mentioned being on it for 5 YEARS. I know you're supposed to trust your doctor, but I really don't think I can. Wish my actual doctor wasn't away. I'm fairly fit - walk everyday, well balanced (keen dancer) and am now on strict GF diet and have really upped my fruit and veg intake. I've never broken anything (touch wood!!). Just had all my vits and minerals bloods checked and they are all fine. So I am really loathe to take some medicine that might ruin my health. I've worried so much today I couldn't work. Hi Debs,
Welcome to the forum. I can understand your worries about Alendronic Acid and don't know what to say other than go back to your doctor when you can and discuss this with him.
I'm intolerant to grains (don't know if I am Coeliac but when I had the blood test I was already gluten free for months so the test was invalid). I don't eat any grains or food made from grains at all now and I feel much better for it - I'm also diabetic and grains spike my blood glucose so that didn't help. I eat a lot of oily fish, meat, nuts, eggs, veggies and healthy fats. I'm a lot fitter since my diagnoses too ! No fractures either
I'm prescribed Strontium Ranelate for my osteoporosis which has given me no side effects in the three and a half years I've been taking it. I also take 2000IU vitamin D3 per day and get my levels checked every few months - they are in the optimum range.
Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10
