Hi everyone, my boyfriend has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis, he is 46 and it is quite advanced. It's quite scary trying to get my head round it and give him the support he needs. What does the future hold for him?

Hi Katie....So sorry to hear about your boyfriend. The only positive thing I can say is, at least he has found out and hopefully can get some help. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis this year, I am 54. Do look into the drugs you are offered and make a careful decision, with help of a sympathetic doctor. Best Wishes to you both.

Also male I was diagnosed two years ago with some of my spine scoring -4.2 in one area. (-3.9) on average. Hips not to bad.
I read much about Alendronic acid (a bisiphosphonate) and refused it. I suggest he does some research into bisophosphonates.
Initially took various supplements and strontium citrate and slightly altered my diet as well as cutting down on alcohol. Luckily I ended up seeing a specialist willing to prescribe me Strontium Ranelate which is not licensed by NICE therefore unusual.
Also now do weight training, mountain biking and hill walking to no ill effect. The latter two I did prior to diagnosis. Two years on and having fallen of the Mountain Bike a few times...still no breaks but carrying on with my favoured activities was a decision I arrived at despite any increased risk.
In the end you still have to live your life.
