Hi, has anyone had kyphoplasty.  I'd be very interested to  know how you found it.  Did it get rid of the pain from your wedge fractures? I am seriously thinking of paying for private surgery as I have been in pain for 6 months from 3 fractures and can't bear it much longer.  Also my quality of life has been seriously compromised.  I am 65 yrs old.

Hi, go to www.medtronic.com. You will find info on Balloon Kyphoplasty. 700,000 spinal fractures have been treated, by over 14,000 spine specialists worldwide. Also, look up the FREE study on google. You may find it interesting. Hope this info helps.

I've had balloon kyphoplasty on wedge fractures on T9 & T10.The fractures occurred in May 2008 and it took until May 2009 for my local NHS hospital to tell me that vertebroplasty was unsuitable and kyphoplasty was unavailable on the NHS-certainly here in Devon .Luckily I read an article in the Daily Mail about this operation, and went to see the consultant-who is a neurological and spinal surgeon-in July 2009, in London. Because of the time lapse since the fractures I had to have extra scans to confirm that they hadn't yet healed, and I had the procedure in September 2009.Went in to the hospital early morning, operation started at noon, left hospital after breakfast the following day.And went for a walk in Regents Park! To be standing and walking upright and painfree after 16 months of agony was unbelievable. True, it cost me £12,000.00 of my hard earned savings, but worth every penny. I was so desperate that I would have taken out a loan if I'd had to. Contact me if you need any more info.

Hi, I hope you dont mind me emailing you privately (especially as its Xmas Eve) re: balloon kyphoplasty. I am aged 58yrs and until approx. 7wks ago I was working 30hrs per week and a very busy housewife. I started with low back pain which to cut a long story turned out to be advanced osteoporosis, confirmed on a dexa scan, within the next 2wks I had multiple vetebral fractues, which has resulted in severe pain, decreased mobilty and a very rounded back! I am absolutlely devasted and haven't as yet seen a consultant, but I do believe that they are going to offer me Forteo,(the daily injection) My question is can the kyphoplasty help with the rounded shape on your back?

I was very shocked at the cost of this procedure and I will unfortunately have to hope I can have it on the NHS if appropriate.

One very stressedand still in shock OP patient.

Hi Lydia,

I have read that if you have kyphoplasty within 3 months of a fracture then you will regain the lost height in your spine.  I hope you have a good GP who will refer you quickly to a consultant.  Good luck!

Thanks for taking the trouble to write.  Yours is a very heartening story.  I wonder if you regained your height.? I was told it was too late for kyphoplasty and only vertebroplasty would be suitable.  I haven't taken the hospital up on their offer as yet as I'm a bit frightened of having cement injected into my spine by a radiologist. it is nearly 12 months since my 1st fracture and I still get pain at T11 although it does not restrict my mobility, thank goodness.

I do hope your troubles are over.

Ann

Hi Gardner, it was good to read your post re, balloon kyphoplasty, i am on waiting list to have this done but my multiple fractures are over a year old, the worst ones are T12 and L1, they are the ones he wil do first. If that works he will do L2,L3 L4, i should have had the first op done in oct but still waiting, my op nurse emailed him for me as i am in such pain,my life has come to a halt over the last 18months. Got a pamidronate iv infustion on the 7th jan, i hope this cement works for me, i too will be over regents park, as i live in primrose hill, what joy it will be to be able to walk without pain and bending over. happy new year from, pudseybear

Hi.  I'm new to this forum and I'm really glad I've found it as I currently feel very much 'in the dark' about my recent diagnosis.  Very briefly, I'm 38 and have been diagnosed with steroid induced osteoporosis.  I have multiple vertebral fractures - some wedge fractures which have caused 2 inches of height loss and partial collapse of the vertebral body.  The worst fractures are at T11 and L1, but L3 and L4 are also affected.  Technically my DEXA scan only showed osteopenia - I've no idea yet what my 'T' scores mean but for the record they are lumbar spine -1.2 and hip -2.4.  I've been told I've been 'very unlucky' to sustain these fractures as my scores are apparently quite good.

It's taken months to get a proper disgnosis - I sustained the back injury whilst bending to 'shunt' a suitcase a few feet along the floor in August.  Initially the GP sent me away saying it was muscle strain despite the crippling back pain.  I was only diagnosed properly in early January and have been in pain for months.  I have been having physio and acupuncture privately which has helped somewhat.  Heat packs also help, however I cannot take ibuprofen as I have a stomach ulcer.

I feel like my whole mid section has collapsed and I hunch like an old woman   Walking any distance is getting increasingly difficult and the only relief I get it lying down.  I am investigating having Kyphoplasty and am seeing my GP again tomorrow.  I would be grateful if anyone could recommend a good consultant in either London or Surrey.  I would like to go for a consultation to see if I am suitable for this procedure.  Aside from the pain, the most depressing thing is the height loss and how it is affecting my posture and mobility.  If the procedure is not available on the NHS, I'm hoping my BUPA cover will pay for it.

Many thanks,

Kat x

Hi Kat, I am in the same situation as you, i am already on the waiting list to have this done. My worst spinal fractures are T12 L1 but also have multiple fractures L2 L3 L4 L5, i also have 3 monthly iv infushions of pamidronate to treat the op, but this has no effect on my pain. I have lost a lot of height, and like you have collapsed in the middle, not a pretty site, also my fractures are sticking out, so its difficult to lay on my back, as it feels like a knife sticking in my back. My t scores are spine 4.5 and hips 3.5, so its quite bad, hope this helps, take care pudseybear..PS THIS FORUM IS VERY GOOD AND YOU WILL MAKE SOME GOOD FRIENDS.
