| Hi, I am new to writing on forums of any description, but thought I would give it a go. I am Coeliac 12 years diagnosed and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis for a few years, having first had osteopenia, then on second DXA scan, osteoporosis. The doc tried me on the usual bisphosphonate, then put me on Risedronate. I developed aching legs. Two years ago - my dream holiday to Cyprus - I had to have a steroid injection to enjoy it. I gradually got worse and sometimes could hardly get up the stairs at night (I am 56 so not exactly old yet). Then a miracle happened, I forgot to order my tablets. So I went for a week or two without. Then I told the doc I wanted to cut them out completely and see what would happen. I gradually got stronger, was able to line dance again. Last week I did a 5 mile walk for Weston Hospice and have never been so pleased. I raised £160.00. Six months ago I couldn't have walked a mile. The doc now insists I take a different supplement Protelos or Strontium I think it is called. Side effects? watch this space! ...... Cath

Hi Cath,
Welcome to the forum ! I haven't got coeliac but I am intolerant to grains and so avoid them completely so I imagine we may have similar dietary restrictions. I'm 57 and feel very fit despite the osteoporosis and diabetes as well. I was put on Strontium Ranelate (Protelos) as I have a history of hiatus hernia and duodenal ulcer and so bisphosphonates are contraindicated. I'm happy to say that after more than three years I've not had any side effects from the Strontium Ranelate at all and my bone density has increased
If your doctor prescribes it for you, there's a Patient Support Programme that you can join www.protelos.co.uk/Patients You can talk to a specialist nurse about Strontium Ranelate via a freephone number about any problems you have with it and any concerns about osteoporosis. There's also a magazine you get with articles about osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

| Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have been out of action and busy so not looked for ages on forum. It sounds like you do have an intolerance of some kind. It is odd that you also have Diabetes, as my consultant has told me I have gluten intolerence, tried to say it was diabetes but my random glucose came back ok. It goes hand in hand sometimes with Coeliac Disease. They still do not know why I am losing weight so still under investigation. So far, though I asked if I could stop the Strontium for a couple of months. This was only last Thursday. Since then my legs have stopped aching to the point where I think I will be able to go line dancing again tonight and actually do some dancing! I probably do need to take care with diabetes in mind at a later age. I am 56 now and so don't want to make things worse. Any suggestions as to what I should avoid/cut out completely? I shall probably go to the nurse again, to get another test, but want to try and be good in the meantime. My big concern now is, what else is there for my osteoporosis. While I have not had any breaks (touch wood quickly) I am concerned for the future, especially as because of Coeliac I have not absorbed things in the past. Meanwhile, I have hobbies of gardening, line dancing and photography to keep me going. So all good! Nice talking to you. Cath

Hi Cath,
I didn't know that diabetes sometimes goes hand in hand with coeliac. I was diagnosed with it when I was 53 (I'm now 57). My main initial symptom of diabetes was weight loss even though I was eating more and more. My fasting blood glucose levels were high which revealed the diagnosis. I've managed to stop the weight loss by cutting carbs and so stabilising my blood glucose levels. I have to eat a high fat and protein diet and get my vitamins from leafy non starchy veggies. I cut out all grains and foods made with them completely and all high carb foods. I think if your gut recovers from the damage that the gluten does to it you will start to absorb nutrients better. If your vitamin D levels are low despite the sun, you can get vitamin D injections and so bypass your gut.
I thought you wrote that Risedronate caused your aching legs ? Does Strontium make them ache too ?
