I received a dose of Aclasta by infusion at the end of October last year and initially suffered flu like symptoms as well as painful and swollen joints, temperature, shivers etc. these very severe side effects diminished over a few weeks but I am wondering whether some of the possible side effects mentioned in the aclasta leaflet could still be occurring now i.e.headache,dizziness,pain in the feet, pain in leg muscles, occasional lethargy and fatigue(having to go to bed)

I also suffer from meniere's and am unsure whether this has worsened - having never expereinced headaches with this condition in over 20 years, or whether this is as a result of side effects from the zolendronic acid still being in my system?

Hi Meg

The ongoing side effects you describe in your post may possibly be an adverse effect from the zoledronic acid (Aclasta) infusion but it’s really difficult to say for sure.  From the clinical trials, side effects such as flu like symptoms, aches and pains and headache usually occurred within 1-3 days of the infusion, although from your post you seem to have experienced similar effects which lasted much longer. This is described as an inflammatory type response to the treatment or acute phase reaction.  We have been aware on the helpline however of a minority of users of bisphosphonates (which includes zoledronic acid) who develop severe even disabling joint/muscular type pain. This type of pain does appear to be different to the acute pain (as well as the fever and chills) that sometimes occurs at first with these treatments but is usually transient and resolves within several days. This explanation would not of course account for all the symptoms you describe in your post. Clearly this is something that requires a further discussion with your GP or specialist and considered alongside your other medical problem (meniere's disease). I do hope you are able to get to the bottom of this issue and please to not hesitate to call the nurses on the helpline if you’d like to discuss this further.
