speaking for myself i have had good results since starting actonel but horrendous ones on the first one i started which was probably alendronic acid. I have had risedronate and alendronic acid, one of them is marketed as actonel. I found the first drug gave me awful emotional instability and low mood because of that a few days after taking it and the second week was worse so as I did want to stay alive i stopped it as i was worried. Actonel had none of that effect and i am beginning to function a lot better since taking it. I do have pan though and it's tiring but if my bones are getting stronger I don't care. As for calcium any vet will tell you that you need magnesium as well as calcium and i take zinc too. they act synergistically. I reckon they alo have effects on mmod tooo (speaking from personal experience) and we recognise this effect in animals so it would make sense for it to affect people this way too. I'm only posting to give reassurance if the first drug doesn't work and you have serious O then don't despiar try another one, get sunlight, etc etc and all the other things too but my experience of actonel so far has been good. I will be interested to see what my scan results are but i have been able ot get back to walking on my knee again.

Thanks for the replies

I dont tolerate Aspartame well at all so thats out for me.

So Annabel are you saying that  the strontium whether it is  the prescribed one or the supplement, carries the risk of  bloodclot even though tiny?

Is it the actual strontium that causes this then and why?

I only worry because I have family members with heart attacks etc.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the site I was diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis two years after breaking my fifth metatarsal ( the favoured bone break of footballers!). I was first put on alendronic acid which I couldn't tolerate as it made my mouth very sore. So I stopped taking it after a year and just continued with the Adcal tablets. I went to see my GP on Monday after a follow up DEXA scan and he now wants me to take another medication I think called Ibandronic Acid, but I have told him that I do not want to take any medications if I can possibly help it, I have read the side effects and don't comfortable about it. I also mentioned to him about the information in BMJ about the increased risk of heart problems when taking the calcium supplements and he didn't know what I was talking about. I spoke to the nurses at the NOS and they said that if my diet was good and balanced, which it is I eat lots of oily fish green veggies plus nuts and seeds, plus dairy and soya milk that should be enough. However after reading on here I think I might give the Algecal a go do you know I can buy them.

I have also increased my exercise by walking every day 30 to 50 minutes and have just started to lift some weights as well as yoga for balance.
Oh by the way I'm 58 years.

Andi.

Where do you buy the AlgaeCal from please?  Do you have to order it from  America or can you buy it in the UK.  I have just read a really worrying article about the serious side effected of bisphosonatess and am keen to try something less scary!

Hi - I am worried about the side effected of Alendronic Acid and have read the Save our Bones website; am interested in all the posts about AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium but can only find the American website.  Does anyone know if you can buy these supplements in the UK please?  I have Osteopeania so I am going to look for a book on natural treatments as well - any suggestions?

Whether you purchase AlgaeCal in te US or the UK you should be especially careful to avoid websites that offer New Chapter Bone Strength Take Care.  This company switched from AlgaeCal to an inferior quality, much less expensive form of calcium without having the decency to inform customers or shopkeepers about the change.  They still charge premium prices beware the New Chapter product.  Many websites claim they have New Chapter Bone Strength Take Care that contains authentic AlgaeCal.  They are scamming us!

Hello all,

When I told my doctor that I was having some issues with constipation, he told me it might be the calcium supplements I was talking because calcium pills out there are actually made from rocks (!) because they're mined from limestone. When I heard that, I switched to AlgaeCal right away because my doctor told me it was body friendly, easily digested and had scientific studies backing up its efficacy. Since then, my digestive woes have cleared up. HOWEVER, I have to say that I used to take New Chapter's Bone Strength Take Care product because they used AlgaeCal as their calcium ingredient. But I recently heard that New Chapter actually stopped using AlgaeCal and went for a cheaper calcium that's not even certified organic. New Chapter did not do anything to notify consumers like me about that change, which I consider a BAIT AND SWITCH. Has anyone else heard about this? I think it's an awful thing to do to women like me who are just trying to take the right supplements for our bones! Here's an article I found on it: http://www.nutritionaloutlook.com/article/ingredient-switching

I switched to the Garden of Life RAW product, which does use AlgaeCal, but I'm worried about anyone else out there who thinks they're taking AlgaeCal in the New Chapter products, when they actually aren't.

Thanks!

Hi, I am new to all this and posted something on this forum last week, but probably in the wrong place.  I have just started on Algae Cal, ordered from the US.  Cost about £200 including postage for 6 months supply.  After all the research I did on it I was convinced that it was the best possible thing to take and with no side effects.  Plant based calcium [so no associatedd calcium issues] and the Strontium of course.  I now need to go and tell my Doctor that after reading everything about alendronic acid and reading of all the awful side effects, I will not be taking it and have opted for the AlgaeCal instead.  I do need my GP to agree to another bone density scan after 6 months so I can see what is happening, but as I will be saving NHS prescription costs I hope he will agree to this.  If not I understand they can be obtained privately for about £35, so all will not be lost.

Very encouraging to read the positive reports of Algae Cal on this site.  Thank you so much for posting them.
