speaking for myself i have had good results since starting actonel but horrendous ones on the first one i started which was probably alendronic acid. I have had risedronate and alendronic acid, one of them is marketed as actonel. I found the first drug gave me awful emotional instability and low mood because of that a few days after taking it and the second week was worse so as I did want to stay alive i stopped it as i was worried. Actonel had none of that effect and i am beginning to function a lot better since taking it. I do have pan though and it's tiring but if my bones are getting stronger I don't care. As for calcium any vet will tell you that you need magnesium as well as calcium and i take zinc too. they act synergistically. I reckon they alo have effects on mmod tooo (speaking from personal experience) and we recognise this effect in animals so it would make sense for it to affect people this way too. I'm only posting to give reassurance if the first drug doesn't work and you have serious O then don't despiar try another one, get sunlight, etc etc and all the other things too but my experience of actonel so far has been good. I will be interested to see what my scan results are but i have been able ot get back to walking on my knee again.

Thanks for the replies

I dont tolerate Aspartame well at all so thats out for me.

So Annabel are you saying that  the strontium whether it is  the prescribed one or the supplement, carries the risk of  bloodclot even though tiny?

Is it the actual strontium that causes this then and why?

I only worry because I have family members with heart attacks etc.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the site I was diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis two years after breaking my fifth metatarsal ( the favoured bone break of footballers!). I was first put on alendronic acid which I couldn't tolerate as it made my mouth very sore. So I stopped taking it after a year and just continued with the Adcal tablets. I went to see my GP on Monday after a follow up DEXA scan and he now wants me to take another medication I think called Ibandronic Acid, but I have told him that I do not want to take any medications if I can possibly help it, I have read the side effects and don't comfortable about it. I also mentioned to him about the information in BMJ about the increased risk of heart problems when taking the calcium supplements and he didn't know what I was talking about. I spoke to the nurses at the NOS and they said that if my diet was good and balanced, which it is I eat lots of oily fish green veggies plus nuts and seeds, plus dairy and soya milk that should be enough. However after reading on here I think I might give the Algecal a go do you know I can buy them.

I have also increased my exercise by walking every day 30 to 50 minutes and have just started to lift some weights as well as yoga for balance.
Oh by the way I'm 58 years.

Andi.
