I have had the same problems with S. Ranelate and A. Acid.  First one made my mouth sore and A. Acid gave me jaw and body pain and upset tum.  What were your side effects?

I found that I could feel the alendronic acid circulating round my legs shortly after taking it.

I also found it made me tired.

My dentist was pleased that I had come off it as he said that it could cause a wound to not heal in certain cases. So that a tooth extraction site would not heal.

Hope it goes well for you.

Having done a massive amount of research I have decided not to take any of the drugs including the strontium ranelate. I am following an alkaline producing diet, as recommended in the better bones book and also the save our bones website, and others. I am doing pilates and yoga, and walking more. I already feel better than I have for ages, partly I suspect because I have taken control of this, also my GP was very helpful and respectful of my decision. It is interesting that many of the books about this are from USA or Canada...I wonder if that is because we have a different attitude in the UK towards the GP...or because in USA many more women are diagnosed as osteoporotic, because more are tested...I have my doubts about whether that is a good thing! Many of the Drug companies are also based in the US, and most of the research is funded by the drug companies...as they say, go figure!

The author of the article, Dr. Fujita, is an owner of a competing calcium who has been in trouble with the FTC in the past for making wild claims regarding his product

AlgaeCal has been compared to calcium carbonate in the CEVA study showing superior absorption and in the human osteoblast study showing several fold greater effects on human bone building cells versus calcium carbonate.  The study was done by University of Connecticut and will soon be published in a prominent peer reviewed journal.  How can a plant derived complex of minerals with superior clinical results in comparative research be called calcium carbonate????

You can see the study here {link removed}

I would also point out that the article above (Dr Fujita) is unreferenced, and as such isn't more than opinion until backed up by properly referenced facts.

What underhand means companies will stoop to to get business And people complain about big pharma and say 'natural' is best ! This should teach all of us to never take anything at face value but to investigate and research as much as possible. Whether a doctor, a nurse, a dietician, a pharmacutical company or a health food company, none can be fully trusted to be impartial in their advice. Of course many people are honest and impartial but it's difficult for patients who are feeling scared and vulnerable to know whose advice is impartial.

I would like to point out too, when it comes to impartiality/advertising, that in the Winter issue of National Osteoporosis News in the article about vibration therapy, that the only case study was by Mary Little who is the UK representative for the purchase of the Juvent platform - hardly a person without a financial interest in Juvent ! I took this issue up with one of the NOS staff on the NOS magazine at the time and I know she was okay with this. I still wasn't happy and think they should have had case studies only of people without a financial interest in any of the products. Not every reader of NOS News will know that Mary Little has a financial interest in Juvent - how could they be expected to ? Because I had looked at the Juvent when I purchased my vibration platform I knew of her connection, otherwise I would have been none the wiser.

Osteoporosis - Strontium Ranelate, Dekristol vitamin D3 20,000 IU/week, weight lifting, walking and vibration platform exercise, alkaline loaded diet, vitamin K2 MK-7 100mcg/d, K2 MK-4 5mg/d. Diabetes - Repaglinide, low carb diet and exercise. Congenital heart defect - Omacor and CoQ10

Hi Everyone

Re AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost, I have been taking these for 2 months and am thrilled that the 4yrs of pain in my upper back has gone, which is such a relief.  However, I noticed I was getting a lot of stomach gas every day plus I have been very tired, but I've got a lot of other health problems and have been quite ill recently, so I put it down to that.  But yesterday I came across some postings on another forum (can't remember where) which mentioned tiredness and stomach gas as side effects of AlgaeCal, so yesterday I didn't take it (but continued with the Strontium) and it made all the difference.  I used to take Osteocare with no problems, so was not expecting that another type of calcium and minerals would have that effect.

Has anyone else taking AlgaeCal noticed these side effects?  I am recovering from M.E. and also have an under-active Thyroid, so I already have very limited energy and really don't need something else to make me feel even more tired, but with AlgaeCal I was yawning non-stop and dragging myself around.

I am very impressed that my back pain has gone, though, so I shall continue with the Strontium.

Thanks for the feedback Jen. I'm glad it seems to be working for you on back pain.

I haven't noticed any side effects myself but my back pain is almost completely gone after taking both AlgaeCal and the Strontium boost for over a year.

I hope the strontium on its own still does the trick - could you take another manufacturers calcium along with it?

Please let us know how you get on.
