Hi,

I started taking the Algaecal and the Strontium Boost recently, having not got on with the calcium prescribed by my doctor and also wanted to put off bisphosphonates if possible. Well, first day I felt nausea and bloating, which I thought was the Strontium so stopped. Then for the next 3 days had just the Algaecal thinking I'd go back to the strontium later. Well, daytime I continued to feel bloated and had sulphur smelling wind, then at night time could not sleep due to what I can only describe as some sort of radiating pressure pain down from my lower back down my buttocks and legs. It still kept me awake even with painkillers. I do have Psoriatic Arthritis but do not normally have that. So, I stopped the Algaecal and low and behold, the pain stopped!

I know everyone is different and maybe some are getting on fine with Algaecal and Strontium Boost, however, I thought I'd let you all know about this. I'm very disappointed, maybe it was my body detoxing from starting to repair itself or something? Or maybe it just doesn't agree with me. I'm starting to wonder if the Algaecal might have other things in due to pollution seeing as it's collected from the sea.

Hi Piglet,

I have a bad reaction to any form of calcium supplement, whether it is the prescribed sort or the sort from the health food shop so buying a so called 'natural' product is no guarantee that you will not experience an adverse reaction to it. Actually nothing can be natural unless it's within the food it comes with as even a health food supplement, such as AlgaeCal for example, is put together artificially in a factory.

Have you tried the Strontium Boost on its own ?

Hi Annabel,

I haven't tried the strontium on it's own yet as I've now got sciatica at the moment, haven't had it in years, so might try once I'm better. My GP said that strontium is weak as a treatment so wants to give me bisphosphonates first. Did you request going on strontium yourself or did your doc, and how have you found it? I've got long standing Psoriatic Arthritis as well as significant osteopenia of -2.4 and am only 38 so want to do what's best rather than deteriorate further, especially as I have a little monkey, my 4 year old to look after!

Hi Piglet,

Strontium isn't weak as a treatment at all - it costs more than a bisphosphonate, that's why they like you to try a bisphosphonate first. But I have a history of hiatus hernia and duodenal ulcer which is a contraindication for bisphosphonates so my consultant put me straight on to Strontium Ranelate which, incidentally, I was very happy about. No side effects and I've been on it four years now
