Until my osteoporosis diagnosis a couple of months ago I'd always done a lot of sit-ups. I stopped doing them as soon as I read they should be avoided with this condition. However, when I visited the Rheumatologist (only saw young SHO) on Monday she said she didn't see any reason why I should stop so I'm confused.
I'm also considering adding a rowing machine to our little gym at home but again not sure if it would be a good thing?
I do have osteoporosis in my lower spine.
Advice appreciated

Hi Susan,

It sounds like you need to speak to someone who has more experience of exercise with osteoporosis than you have been getting so far. I was told from the beginning that rowing was right out because it's bending forwards from your waist which can lead to compression fractures of the spine, the same harm as touching your toes exercise can do.

Not sure what you mean by 'sit-ups' but if you mean sitting up from a chair without using your arms to push you up then that is a good exercise, it works your legs.

Have you tried ringing the NOS Helpline ? They might be able to advise, plus there are NOS leaflets on exercise. I have a couple of books specifically on osteoporosis and exercise and also some general books on osteoporosis which mention good exercises. All the exercises which I do with the Slow Burn/SuperSlow technique are all safe for osteoporosis - all safe if done in the correct way I hasten to add ! It's so important that people get advice from someone who knows - either a physiotherapist who knows about osteoporosis or a personal gym trainer who knows about it - anyone with proper training will know and check that you are doing things in the correct way.

Hi Annabel
sit-ups are a good abdominal exercise. They're done from lying position. I think they're also known as curl-ups. I've always done them as I find they're the best exercise for my stomach and going through the menopause I have put on a bit of weight around my middle which I hate.
I agree that I need to speak to someone. This SHO also said she wouldn't have cancelled my ski-ing and that I shouldn't let osteoporosis rule my life. She did however say not to put myself at risk of falling which I thought was funny since she would have ok'd my beginner ski-ing
Thanks for the sensible advice

Hi Susan,

Just realised I should have mentioned that I got a GP exercise referral to a gym where the trainer was knowledgeable about osteoporosis and exercise. Just ask your GP for an "exercise referral" - you not only get a trainer but you get a discount on the cost of the gym.

Hi all, another good excersise, is the hoola hoop, the consultant from the hospital, states its also good for the stomach muscles as well as the spine. A lot easier and cheaper, its also guaranteed to help you lose 2lb in a wk. hope that will help. I found a really good excerise which I mentioned in on of the forums, and a few of youhave tried it and were impressed, it relieves pain quite instantly. perhaps you would care to try it?? helena45

Hi Annabel
I'll ask my GP about an exercise referral the next time I go. Thanks for that

Hi Helena
good tip about the hoola hoop! I'd forgotten how good that was for your waist & tummy. There are hoola hoop exercises on the Wii, haven't done them for ages but will get back into that daily! Much safer than sit-ups. Thanks for the tip.
I do sometimes do the exercise you posted on a different thread
