I don't know anything about Risedronate. You need to find out whether its mode of action is the same as AA. If so, it does seem pointless taking it. Ask for a NHS referal to see a Consultant who knows about OP and see what they say. Mean while continue to read up all you can on the subject and print off any information that you feel is important, so that you can take it with you.

I stopped AA due to severe indigestion and bone pains.. I was refused SR by my GP for months because of the cost. I finally managed to get an NHS referal to see a Consultant. She didn't like the fact that I was self medicating with strontium citrate and agreed to let me have SR. I am not saying that you should self medicate. I did this because I had already had a bleeding duodenal ulcer, a few years before and was getting paranoid that I was starting with another one. I had also broken both wrists and was desperate to get onto treatment.

Strontium ranelate may or may not be suitable for you, who knows how they will react to any drug? All you can do is see a Consultant, take someone with you when you have your appointment for moral support and don't let yourself be intimidated.

GOOD LUCK

Alendronate versus Risedronate

My doctor changed me from AA to Risedronate because AA had shown little improvement over the two years I had been taking it. Having gained lots more information from this site I am wondering why my doctor changed me to another Bisphosphonate on the recommendation of her pharmacy colleague and not a specialist. I would have thought a different type of drug as with Strontium ranelate would be a different approach but maybe it's down to cost or the fact that my system tolerates Bisphosphonate. I have an appointment to see my doctor later in April -this time I will be asking a lot more questions!
