I am 56 and recently started to take alendronic acid. I was devastated to discover that on my last dexa scan my score had gone down to -3.5. My mother died earlier this year after suffering from osteoporosis for 20 years.
I have done weight bearing exercise 5 days a week for years.... being well aware of this horrid condition, I am hoping that the alendronic acid will help. I hate taking it!
However, just when I feel young to have this problem I learn that my daughter, aged 30, has had a dexa scan and has osteopenia.
At least we know that we have a problem so hopefully in the years to come more more will be discovered to help us
Sandra:)

RE: Welcome to General Chat

I was diagnosed at 61, was told I had spongy bones for my age!! :)

RE: Welcome to General Chat

Hi Karen, I know what you mean about the age thing!!! I was diagnosed last November at the age of 58, I had 5 verterbral fractures. To say I was devastated would be an under estimation as I have always been very young for my age and trendy, used to be fanatical on the gym!! It is 1yr since my diagnosis and I have improved quite a lot but the fractures have taken away 2.5inches of my height and I lost a stone in weight.

It is a worry to have OP so young but the positive side is at least we know and can try to help ourselves, there will be lots out that that are unaware. My OP was advanced, my T score was -4.1, this has improved to -3.4 after 5mths treatment of Forsteo, which is a daily injection. I think I cried for a full 6mths when they told me I would have to inject myself everyday. I thought this cannot be happening to "ME" lol. I am also following the acid/alkaline diet.

Lydia x

RE: Welcome to General Chat

hi james

my name is paula i have been suffering osteoporosis for 18 months

RE: Welcome to General Chat

Hi, I have just joined the forum - sent out a few messages with no replies. I am 56 and just broken my first bone!!!!!! Awaiting a dexa scan but consultant surgeon has not doubt. With all due respect, everything i seem to be reading is focussing on the elderly with osteoporosis - I dont consider myself elderly yet????? Is there any one out there that is my age group?:w00t:

RE: Welcome to General Chat

Hi James, I have just joined and this sounds a good idea to me. They're such a miss when they leave us, like any family member.
Walking is my main form of exercise. Even if the weather is dreadful & I don't really fancy it I have to get out there with the dogs.

We sometimes go away for a few days walking. Being in the North East we're not too far from Hadrian's Wall, the beautiful Northumberland Coast and we love to travel up into Scotland. We were up in Aviemore a couple of weeks ago for the ski-ing & snowboarding though I was sidelined as my GP advised against it. We're planning a walking week up in the Highlands during the Summer. My husband took up running again a year ago and recently did a half marathon. At 51yrs old he's now hooked and has entered 3 more races. He did the Great North Run when he was 21yrs old and hasn't really trained since so I'm very proud of him:) I'm still trying to persuade myself to get out running with him but I'm not quite there yet, preferring to walk! I'm only 45yrs old so feel I should push myself a bit more but I'm still coming to terms with my diagnosis.
Enjoy the Spring weather everyone:)

RE: Welcome to General Chat

Sorry about your dog, I had mine put down a month ago, Im devastated, she was really special.
