Welcome to the Bone Densitometry and IR(ME)R section of the National Osteoporosis Society website.

I am very pleased to announce that the next lecture course for the National Training Scheme for Bone Densitometry will be on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th October 2010 at Jury’s Inn, Birmingham.

The Training Scheme consists of the lecture course (which includes Ionising Radiation Protection training) followed by an optional examination and portfolio submission process. Successful completion of this process leads to Certification in Bone Densitometry providing operators with proof of their competence to perform bone densitometry measurements.

The two day lecture course consists of:

Day 1 – Core module
Introduction to osteoporosis and bone densitometry:

  • Pathophysiology and epidemiology of bone
  • Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis
  • Overview of methods and instruments for bone densitometry
  • How to run a bone densitometry service
  • Clinical interpretation and reporting of bone mineral density results

Day 2 (am) – DXA/pDXA module

  • The techniques of axial and peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)
  • Special applications of bone densitometry
  • Errors and artefacts, quality control and quality assurance for DXA

Day 2 (pm) – Ionising Radiation Protection (Medical Exposure) IR(ME)R 2000 training

  • Radiation hazards and dose
  • Statutory requirements and legislation
