Oesophageal cancer and bisphosphonates

A study published today identified an increased risk in oesophageal cancer in those taking bisphosphonates long-term. However, recent studies have shown contradictory results with no increased risk.

National Hip Fracture Database

The National Hip Fracture Database National Report 2010 was launched today and covers more than 36,000 hip fracture patients treated in hospitals in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

This report is a vital tool in helping us review the level of care that people with hip fractures are receiving. It shows great improvements from previous reports with three quarters of hip fracture patients now being assessed for osteoporosis. However, that still leaves 25% without assessment. With fractures as severe as this, there is little reason not to check bone strength.
